- **Rule 1:** After **am, is, are, was, were**, use:  

  - **V4 (Present Participle -ing)** for **Active Voice**.  

  - **V3 (Past Participle)** for **Passive Voice**.  

- **Rule 2:** After **has, have, had**, always use **V3**.  

- **Rule 3:** After **be, been, being**, use **V3**.  

- **Rule 4:** If none of the above, use **V1 (Base Form)** or **V2 (Simple Past)**.  

  - Use **V2** with: *yesterday, ago, last, in + [year], this morning*.  

- **Rule 5:** After **modal verbs** (can, could, will, would, shall, should, may, might, must) and **to, please, do/does/did**, use **V1**.
